During his presentation Karl explained the way that HSE used strategic health and safety problems as a basis for developing targeted routine health and safety inspections alongside proactive inspections after major RIDDOR incidents.

He reminded members that HSE provided useful guidance on a wide range of health and safety topics on their website and he explained the step by step approach used by HSE Inspectors to make their enforcement decisions. He also explained how HSE Fees for Intervention were applied and looked ways of challenging Notices of Contravention or Fees for Intervention if you think that they have been applied unfairly. He also gave examples of court cases where fines have been reduced.
