About the session
Simon will be bringing 3M’s Demo van with a fall from height test rig to the meeting. He will demonstrate what happens in a fall by dropping 100 kg onto the different types of lanyards to demonstrate how they perform and the forces they experience.
He will discuss the ABC-DEF of Fall Protection:
A. Anchors: types and requirements.
B. Body Support (harnesses): types, appropriate uses important points for correct use.
C. Connection: 1. Work restraint lanyards, use and potential pitfalls. 2. Fall Arrest: use and fall clearances. 3. Self-retracting lifelines.
D. Descent and Rescue: considerations in a rescue, psychological, casualty, rescuer, equipment etc…
E. Education and Training.
F. Fall Protection for Tools.
Simon is 3M’s Fall Protection Specialist for north England and Scotland. This role includes delivering product training, site visits and consultancy advice for companies as well as education sessions on safe working at height and confined space access/egress and rescue. Simon has worked with companies from many sectors including the oil and gas industries, distilleries, construction, recycling, and the haulage industry.
He is passionate about workplace H&S, especially ‘work at height’ safety, and he is keen to raise awareness of best practices for working at height.
His interest in height safety began in 2007 after he was employed in Outdoor Education work in the Lake District. He was a member of a local Mountain Rescue Team for 10 years and spent five years as a team equipment officer. This led him to him becoming a specialist adviser about technical aspects of work at height and rope access.
