About the session

Ian’s presentation will provide an overview of the hazards associated with work equipment focusing mainly on fixed machinery. It will include discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of different guarding options. Topics to be covered include:

–  Basic principles of Work Equipment and Machinery Safety.

–  Machinery hazards especially things to look for when carrying out a machinery safety assessment.

–  Guarding and safety devices.

–  Legislation relating to the supply and use of machinery and work equipment.

–  Lifting equipment.

Ian’s presentation will be illustrated with photographs of good and bad practice that he has seen during site visits as an insurance liability surveyor and risk consultant. He is happy to take questions during the presentation as a way of broadening out the content of his presentation to cover members interests and to generate useful discussions.

About Ian

Ian started work as an apprentice commercial vehicle bodybuilder in 1978. He worked on a wide range of woodworking and metalworking machinery and qualified to HNC level in fabrication and welding technology.

His health and safety career began in 1990, with British Rail, mainly in various civil engineering and train operating maintenance departments.  He worked in enforcement and as a risk consultant for a large national insurance broker prior to joining Aegis as a health and safety consultant. Ian has also worked as RSA Insurance plc’s UK Health and Safety Practice Leader.

Ian is a Chartered Fellow of IOSH and is currently Chair of South Cumbria and North Lancashire IOSH Branch.

Members are encouraged to network following the event to discuss workplace problems and practical solutions informally with other safety professionals and the speaker. Committee members will also be available to discuss CPD and volunteering opportunities.
