Simon set up 3M’s demonstration van’s fall from height test rig in a cordoned off area of Crooklands Hotel’s car park. He showed members a wide range of equipment that could be used to prevent falls from height. His demonstration included the use of a 100 kg weight, suspended by different types of lanyards and fall arrest systems, to illustrate their advantages and disadvantages.
He focussed on the ABC-DEF of Fall Protection by covering the following topics:
A Anchors: types and requirements.
B Body Support (harnesses): types, appropriate uses important points for correct use.
C Connection:

- Work restraint lanyards, use and potential pitfalls.
- Fall Arrest: use and fall clearances.
- Self-retracting lifelines. Tools.
D Descent and Rescue: considerations in a rescue, psychological, casualty, rescuer, equipment etc…
E Education and training.
F Fall protection for tools – dropped objects
