South Cumbria Occupational Health and Safety Group’s committee is pleased to announce that they have been awarded a 2021 Safety Group UK Gold Excellence Award in recognition of the support and advice that that they provided for their members during the 2021 using a mixture of virtual meetings and web site advice as well as setting up a well-attended face-to-face HSE Update meeting in December 2021 as soon as Covid-19 restrictions allowed

Phil Sedgwick, Chairman, SCOHSG thanked committee members who had worked hard, throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, to provide members with up-to-date and best practice advice about providing Covid-19 compliant safe systems of work in the workplace, and for those who were home working. This was achieved via SCOHSG’s web site, joint Zoom meetings with South Cumbria & North Lancashire IOSH Branch and regular e-mail updates.

Norman Stevenson, Chairman Safety Groups UK, said that SCOHSG’s Gold Award was well deserved and that the judges were impressed by the quality of the support and advice that that SCOHSG provided for their members throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Committee representatives Carol Stearne, Geoffrey Price and Valerie Kennedy attended the Awards Ceremony that was held at the Safety, Health & Wellbeing Live event at the Manchester Central Convention Complex on Monday 23rd May 2022. Our representatives also assisted on Safety Group UK’s stand before the Award Ceremony.

Valerie Kennedy was also presented with an Outstanding Service Award in recognition of the work that she had done on behalf of SCOHSG’s committee since 1993. During that time, she has held a number of committee positions including chairman, programme secretary, seminar secretary and web site manager. She was instrumental in setting up SCOHSG’s web site in 2014 and has been responsible for keeping it up-to-date since then. She thanked her fellow committee members for nominating her for the award and said that her award would not have been possible without support from the SCOHSG committee whose success has always depended on teamwork – a team that she is proud to belong to.

The Safety, Health & Wellbeing Live event at the Manchester Central Convention Complex was a two-day event. Stuart Mason, another SCOHSG committee member, attended this event on the following day. Stuart merited a ‘special mention’ and thank you in                          Norman Stevenson’s Chairman’s event report because he assisted on Safety Groups UK’s stand all day. Thank you Stuart!
