Thursday 16 November 2023, Zoom meeting
Speaker: Jane Gurney MBE, Farmer, and Founder of the Tilly Your Trailer campaign
Jane’s motivational presentation explained how the death of her nineteen-year son Harry in 2014, in a preventable tractor/trailer accident made her determined to try and prevent other families from experiencing similar pain loss. At his inquest she learnt that faulty brakes on the trailer that her son was towing caused the accident and that the trailer had not been adequately maintained, as required by the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
Jane gave members an overview of the law and the human costs of inadequate trailer maintenance programmes. She discussed: the importance of trailer maintenance programmes, safe use of Jacks and axle stands, trailer body props, load security, strapping and sheeting, use of flashing beacons, trailer weights and speeds and the importance of daily checks before using trailers.
She explained how the Tilly Your Trailer scheme that she founded helps to ensure that trailers are maintained to the legal standard and now has strong support from farmers, dealers, HSE, the police and insurers. It includes an annual 18-point inspection that is carried out on the farm by authorised mechanics. These maintenance checks are then recorded in a central trailer maintenance database for farm trailers that provides farmers with a trailer maintenance record that demonstrates compliance with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, 1998.
