19 October 2023

Venue:     Westmorland Suite, Crooklands Hotel, Crooklands. Kendal, LA7 7NW.

Speaker:  Arup Mahji CMIOSH, MBA, BSc (Hons) Safety, Health & Environmental Manager, Health & Safety Resources, Cumberland Council

Arup’s presentation considered the challenges that employers face when managing the health and safety of employees working from home such as ensuring that they have a safe and suitable work area in their homes and that they do not become isolated from their work colleagues.

He discussed the health and safety dilemmas created by hybrid/agile working in traditional workplaces resulting from the variable numbers of employees being in the workplace/office at any one time, and intricacies of managing employees “hot desking”, working ‘on the move’, and working from home.

Arup explained that these work pattern changes gave employers health and safety management challenges including understanding the juxtaposition of the employer’s, and the employees’ home working health and safety responsibilities for overseeing basic health and safety requirements. For example, ensuring that computer users (desktop, laptop and tablets) have a home working area that complies with the DSE Regulations, 1992. He also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of home working for employees and for employers.
