Jacqui discussed the challenges faced by Local Authority Health and Safety Enforcement Officers due to their wide range of responsibilities such as:

  • Enforcement of Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and associated H & S regulations in the local businesses including: hotels, pubs, restaurants, offices, shops, warehouses, beauty salons, tattoo studios, children’s soft play centres, caravan sites, care homes, animal visitor attractions.
  • Obligations under the Licensing Act 2003 to regulate the sale and supply of alcohol, late night refreshment and entertainment such as live and recorded music, theatrical performances, film shows and indoor sporting events.
  • Investigating RIDDOR reports of serious and fatal accidents and Dangerous Occurrences in premises regulated by LAs.
  • Water sampling: swimming pools, spa pools, water tanks and sources of legionella.
  • Regulation of Private Water Supplies
  • ASB5 notifications for licensed asbestos removal and inspecting removal works.
  • Multi agency working with other regulatory agencies such as the Fire Service, Police, Gas Safe Register, Immigration and UKHSA.
  • Dealing with complaints from the public and employees about businesses in the district.
  • Serving improvement and prohibition notices and undertaking prosecution.
