Thursday 18 May 2023

Venue:    Westmorland suite, Crooklands Hotel, Crooklands. Kendal, LA7 7NW

Speaker: Jane Hartman-Jemmett, Senior SHE Business Partner (Elizabeth Line), Transport for London

Jane gave members an overview of her career and explained that her workplace experience had made her realise that good health and safety management was dependent on:

  • Learning from past health and safety incidents and
  • Knowing who to contact when urgent specialist expertise was needed to find solutions when dealing with unexpected safety incidents.

Jane illustrated this by showing how knowledge that she had gained from investigations into ceiling collapse at the Apollo Theatre in 2013 helped her deal more efficiently with a ceiling collapse at the Grade 1 listed Broadway Building, London, in 2016.

She used the Apollo Theatre and Transport for London’s HQ ceiling collapses as case studies to illustrate how they uncovered some important health, safety, and business learning points. She also stressed the importance of strong leadership and robust emergency management plans to facilitate dealing effectively with unexpected workplace incidents. She said that this was especially important for workplaces that are open to the public.
